چکیده

A recent emergence of the Finite Volume Method (FVM) in structural analysis promises a viable alternative to the well-established Finite Element solvers. In this paper the linear stress analysis problem is discretised using the practices usually associated with FVM in uid ows. These include the second-order accurate discreti-sation on Control Volumes of arbitrary polyhedral shape; segregated solution procedure, in which the displacement components are solved consecutively and iterative solvers for the systems of linear algebraic equations. Special attention is given to the optimi-sation of the discretisation practice in order to provide optimum convergence for the segregated solution procedure. The solver is set up to work eeciently on parallel distributed memory computer ar-chitectures, allowing a fast turnaround for the mesh sizes expected in an industrial environment. The methodology is validated on two test cases: stress concentration around a circular hole and transient wave propagation in a bar. Finally, the steady and transient stress analysis in a Diesel injector valve seat in 3-D will be presented, together with the set of parallel speedup results.

Modified Fixed Grid Finite Element Method to Solve 3D Elasticity Problems of Functionally Graded Materials

In the present paper, applicability of the modified fixed grid finite element method in solution of three dimensional elasticity problems of functionally graded materials is investigated. In the non-boundary-fitted meshes, the elements are not conforming to the domain boundaries and the boundary nodes which are used in the traditional finite element method for the application of boundary condit...

Adaptive Unstructured Grid Generation Scheme for Solution of the Heat Equation

An adaptive unstructured grid generation scheme is introduced to use finite volume (FV) and finite element (FE) formulation to solve the heat equation with singular boundary conditions. Regular grids could not acheive accurate solution to this problem. The grid generation scheme uses an optimal time complexity frontal method for the automatic generation and delaunay triangulation of the grid po...

Parallel Multigrid Solvers for 3D Unstructured Finite Element Problems in Large Deformation Elasticity and Plasticity

Multigrid is a popular solution method for the set of linear algebraic equations that arise from PDEs discretized with the nite element method. The application of multigrid to unstructured grid problems, however, is not well developed. We discuss a method, that uses many of the same techniques as the nite element method itself, to apply standard multigrid algorithms to unstructured nite element...

Discrete Duality Finite Volume Method Applied to Linear Elasticity

We present the Discrete Duality Finite Volume method (DDFV) for solving the linear elasticity problem on unstructured mesh applied to solids undergoing mechanical loads. The procedure is described in detail for three dimensional problems and some theoretical results are provided: the discrete problem is well-posed, stable and convergent. A number of numerical test problems demonstrates the abil...
